DOUNREAY has been told to improve its safety procedures following a fire at a sodium plant on the site. A June 30 deadline has been imposed by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, as part of an improvement notice served on Dounreay Site Restoration Limited.


A FITNESS instructor is taking on a very physical festive challenge to aid the elderly in Caithness. Every year, Kris Hamilton does something to support the county's charities and this time, has has come up with the novel idea of pulling a sleigh full of donations of food, clothing and toiletries between Wick and Thurso.



A GROUP of rail passengers in Wick and Thurso were left standing at the station when staffing problems led to ScotRail having to cancel a scheduled service. The 11.15am Sprinter to Inverness did not run on Sunday after an employee failed to show up, with no replacement available.


BIOMASS boilers at Caithness schools have broken down 48 times in 14 months resulting in pupils losing hundreds of hours of teaching time. Across the Highlands, there were 361 emergency call-outs between July 2013 and September 2014 to 66 boilers in schools, care homes, offices, swimming pools and leisure centres.


PUPILS at Wick High School have inspired judges in a technology competition with their "exceptional" designs. This was the second year that the cumputing science department has hosted the wearable technology competition with Wick High the first Scottish school to run such a contest.


WICK'S pre-Christmas fun day on Saturday proved a resounding success with crowds turning out to enjoy the events of the day. There was a buzz about the town as stores pulled together to mark the annual event with many shopkeepers reporting good takings.


SAM Mackay's winning goal put Academy's title charge back on track as they derailed bogey side Inverurie Locos in a five-goal thriller at Harlaw Park to reclaim second spot on goal difference from Turriff United.
