Win lifts Wick higher 23-Apr-2005
Wick Academy looked to host Nairn County with the intent of spoiling the last game of the season for County and jumping Fort William in the Scot Ads Highland League in the process. Nairn had other ideas and with only two minutes gone Ian Brooks was sent through on goal by John MacAskill. However, the usually potent striker seemed to be distracted and blasted over from 16 yards out to the relief of Don MacMillan.
Wick attempted to take the lead in the 27th minute when Gary Weir sent a quick ball to the edge of the area for Nigel Mackenzie but he was unable to control his effort and his volley went well wide of Jim Calder’s goalmouth.
Nairn had the last chance of the first half in the 36th minute when David MacRae picked the ball up just inside his opponents half before driving a ball high and wide from 25 yards out.
The 62nd minute saw a misunderstanding between Jim Calder and Martin Sanderson let in Andrew MacLeod but he was unable to put the vital touch onto it and sent the ball crashing off the post and out.
The game came to life in the 72nd minute to the delight of the home, and neutral, fans. Nigel Mackenzie raced down the right hand side before sending a ball to the penalty spot for Gary Manson to strike a volley in off the underside of the Nairn goal.
Nairn though they had scored in the 80th minute but they were denied the sought after goal by an outstretched Don MacMillan at the last second. David MacRae teed up Gary Farquhar and the midfielder struck and effort heading for the top left corner but MacMillan was equal to it pulling of the save the match.
Nairn admitted defeat after the 86th minute when Ian Brooks sent a cracking ball to the middle for Dave MacRae but he was unable to control it and put it wide when it appeared to be easier to score.
