CAITHNESS will become the first mainland county in Scotland to have an official flag and the public will decide what it will be. North of Scotland Newspapers succeeded in its fly the flag for Caithness campaign after Highland Council leaders gave the green light in the project which was endorsed by all 10 Caithness councillors.

DRESSMAKERS have provided an "oh so perfect" solution to help gather information which will help in the decommissioning of Dounreay. Elizabeth Fabrics in Thurso worked alongside nuclear clean-up specialists trialling a new way of deploying a radiation camera in the bowels of the site's iconic DFR Dome of Discovery.

A WIND turbine is back in action at a Caithness primary school. Highland Council is adamant the energy generator is safe but anti-wind farm campaigner, Brenda Herrick, things otherwise. She says blades or parts can come loose and therefore claims turbines put youngsters at risk.

THE BOARD of Highland Hospice is set to seek tenders for the construction of its proposed new inpatient unit in Inverness. The £6.5 million development is to be largely funded by a public appeal which is currently running.

CAITHNESS Guilds have been overwhelmed with the donations to an appeal for children in poverty-stricken countries. At the Guild Week Rally last weekend, people had been asked to take along backpacks filled with basic equipment to help children to attend school, as well as selected items of clothing and toiletries.

LIBRARY users in Caithness are to be given every chance to avoid returning books late and having to pay fines with the introduction of a new warning system which has been introduced across the Highlands. High Life Highland has a prior notification system which will email borrowers four days in advance of when they have to return their books.
