A COMMUNITY representative is mobilising opposition for a move to do away with Highland Council's long-established gardening squads in Caithness. Wick Flower Baskets Commitee chair, Joanna Coghill, believes it would spell "a complete disaster", if the squads were axed as part of the council's bid to slash its budget by £64 million over the next five years.

A CAITHNESS councillor has said the delays in getting improvement work carried out at the notorious Berriedale Braes are "embarrassing". Landward Caithness representative Willie Mackay made the claim this week - just days after motorists experienced problems at that section of the A9 when a northbound lorry got into difficulty and caused a two-hour delay.

A CAITHNESS councillor is "absolutely delighted" to see work getting under way at the new Wick High School campus. Gail Ross, who is vice-chair of the education, children and adult services committee, said it is "good news" the early works contract has started.

THE future of Caithness Sports Council is on the line after a proposal to phase out its bedrock funding from Highland Council. Along with its seven counterparts elsewhere in the Highlands, its operation depends on the annual grant it gets from the local authority. The threat appears as part of the council's bid to implement a drastic package of £64 million budget cuts over the next five years.

A CAMPAIGN to recruit GPs to remote and rual practices in the Highlands has been launched in England at a cost of £36,000. The money is being used to put adverts on buses and roadside billboards in Leeds, this month and next, to try and attract doctors to the north of Scotland.

CHURCH services are to be held in Wick and Thurso to remember the 1.24 million people killed every year on the world's roads. RoadPeace Highland has organised the services aimed at giving local people, who have gone through the tragic experience of losing someone in a road accident, a place to meet and comfort each other.

THE first grey seal pups of the season to be rescued in Scotland, have come from beaches in Scrabster and Keiss. Orphas Aphrodite and Typhoon are being cared for by the Scottish SPCA after being found by volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

A FORMER Caithness merchant navy veteran who took part in rememberance services in London at the wekend, described the experience as "very emotional but worthwhile". Alex Buchan who stays in Wick, was at the service of remembrance at the Albert Hall on Saturday night and among the many men and women who were involved in the Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph on Sunday.

SECOND World War veterans Don Mason and Duncan Cormack were guests of honour at the Remembrance Day commemoration at Thurso's war memorial on Sunday. Mr Mason, a pilot with Bomber Command and ex Royal Marine Duncan Cormack, were among a dwindling number of their contemporaries at ceremonies throughout the UK to honour the service men and women who have died in conflicts old and new.
