Travelling family subjected to "unacceptable" comments from Halkirk man

A YOUNG man shouted racial abuse at a travelling family on a Caithness site, Wick Sheriff Court heard today.
Jamie Sutherland, 21, was in a car when he voiced the "unacceptable" comments to Bella Stewart and her family of four, at their caravan home on the Janetstown industrial estate, near Thurso, on September 12.
Fiscal David Barclay said that the term "gipsies" was used by Sutherland, who then threatened he would return and repeat the abuse.
Mr Barclay said: "Mrs Stewart was very concerned at what appeared to be a dislike of her family's travelling background and it being used as a form of abuse. She used her mobile phone to report the matter to the police." The fiscal added that Sutherland had claimed to the police that there were other people involved, although it was suggested that he might have been "the catalyst."
Sutherland, a general worker, of 1 Bishop Court, Halkirk village, admitted racially-aggravated conduct. He will be sentenced on November 28, after Sheriff Andrew Berry sees a background report. The sheriff described his behaviour as "wholly unacceptable."
