Severe assault will have lasting effect on victim sheriff tells teenager

A THURSO teenager, who stabbed a woman after a domestic altercation in the town, was sentenced to 10 months detention today.
Sheriff Andrew Berry commented that he didn't think the 15-year-old appreciated the lasting effect the incident would have on his victim.
The youth, who can't be name for legal reasons, previously admitted the assault to severe injury, on indictment, while on bail. The court was told that, following the altercation, the youth went into the kitchen and procured a small knife declaring his intention to follow a man who had left the house, and stab him. He stood outside shouting he was going to stab the man but when the man's mother came out of the house, he "stuck the knife in her".
The 15-year-old was said to have been shocked at what he had done and sat down on grass waiting for the police to arrive.
Sheriff Andrew Berry, who saw reports, said he had to balance the gravity of the charge, the public interest, the accused's age and the impact on the victim.
However, the sheriff who also read a victim-impact statement, continued: "I don't think you are aware of what you did to this lady. The incident had a dramatic if not drastic effect on her life and will continue to do so, perhaps for long into the future."
The sentence is being backdated to August third when the youth first appeared in court. He will be subject to a five-month supervision order on his release.
