Crime was "a breach of trust" says sheriff

A MEAN thief who stole a fellow villager's Christmas presents was jailed for six months at Wick Sheriff Court, yesterday.
Alan Waters had no problem gaining access to Peter Murchison's bungalow in Halkirk as he had previously done some work at it for the 80-year-old and had retained a key he had been given.
Retired joiner Waters, 61, pleaded guilty on indictment. He carried out the theft while Mr Murchison was away attending a funeral in Orkney, on December 22, last year.
Waters, of 35 Braal Terrace, Halkirk, made two trips to the bungalow and used a wheeled bag to remove his haul which included bottles of wine and spirits and cigarettes and perfume with a total value of almost £1000.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said that the accused had taken advantage of Mr Murchison, knowing he was not at home and using a key, which amounted to "a breach of trust". The sheriff expressed the hope that the sentence imposed, would act as a warning to others.
