THE site of the proposed Tesco supermarket in Thurso is to be tidied up by the middle of next month. That was confirmed this week by the retail supermarket giant and follows widespread complaints about the state of the former auction mart which has been described as "looking like a bomb site".


A Caithness councillor whose grandfather was honoured for his services to his country during World War 1, will be attending a special service to pay tribute to servicemen and women who fought in one of the bloodiest conflicts ever known. Bill Fernie will be one of the 150 people from the Highland Council area who will attend a drumhead service at Edinburgh Castle on Sunday August 10.


A HISTORIC honour has been bestowed on far north MP John Thurso. The Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross MP has been made a privy ouncillor - one of around 500 who help advise the Queen on carryiing out her duties as monarch.


A PARASITE which affects honeybees has been found in Caithness for the first time. The discovery of the varroa mite was confirmed after samples from a hive in the Halkirk area were tested by Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture in Edinburgh. Robin Inglis, secretary of Olrig and Distrct Beekeepers Association, is dismayed by the news but feels it was inevitable.


CAITHNESS Highland cattle breeders George and Wendy Sutherland enjoyed success at shows north and south of the Ord on Saturday. While members of their 16 pedigree fold at Barnaheigh, Halkirk, stood champion and reserve in the breed competition at the Caithness Show at Thurso East, the couple's daughter-in-law, Sandra Sutherland, proved to have the Midas touch at the Sutherland Show in Dornoch.


WICK Groats took a massive step towards retaining the division one championship in a seven-goal thriller , which put the champions three points ahead with five games remaining. The result was Groats, 4, Pentland United 3.
