After so many near misses and frights with cars cutting in on front of us, even on roundabouts like last Friday,vehicle did not give way to traffic on right,gave him a blast as near caused an accident, up went 2 fingers so fast obviously used to doing that & a bad tempered look on the face. So now going to invest in a car camera any recommendations please?

I got a cheap & cheerful one off of the Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-Legend-HD-Vehicle-Recorder/dp/B005Q6CJI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403515406&sr=8-1&keywords=dash+cam). Think £13 delivered at the time.

It kind of does the job but the only thing I can say, having looked at videos online from other dashcams, is try and find one with manual focus.
When it rains the camera tries to auto focus on the either the raindrops on the windscreen or the wipers as they flick past, resulting in mostly blurred video, in HD!
Similarly when the sun is out or shining into the camera it affects the focus, or you can get a reflection off the top of the dash (when its bright mine records the blower vents just lovely!).
At least if you get a manual focus you can set it on the area in front of the car.

Maybe more expensive ones have slightly better optics, but from what I've seen I doubt it.

Also, it seems to act as a good luck charm, I've had less near misses since I've had it in the car! :confused

I'll try and post some links to the videos shortly.

EDIT:

Video focusing on dash reflected off windscreen. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhjIhFRYewk)

The move to dash cams is interesting.I see many cyclist being accused of "looking for trouble" for wearing helmet cams, not on here may I add.I use a helmet cam on my bike purely as evidence should I get wiped out on the road.I have never considered one for the car but it's not such a bad idea, obviously it could be used against you the same way but still worth having I think

Just wondering why people are allowed cameras in their cars to record street accidents but the police will be round if you put up a camera in your house that looks out on the street. It doesn't make sense to me.

The street is fine, if you have them pointing at your neighbours property or garden then you're on dodgy ground.

Phantom thank you for the link, I cannot understand how its so cheap as I priced some in Halford's recently and they were approx £300. Maybe some one will be good enough to explain the type we need. Many thanks.

halfords = halfrauds

you are best with one that will record on a loop, record to SD and have as wide a viewing angle as possible

Can you adjust the framerate down to say 4 fps for longer recording times?

If not, can anyone recommend one that does allow this?
