225 days sentence for man with "a propensity for violence"

A MAN, said by a sheriff to have "a propensity for violence" was jailed for 225 days for his latest assault.
John Glover, 44, repeatedly punched a guest at a drinking session at a house in Thurso, on February 13.
Wick Sheriff Court was told today that that the atmosphere was cordial to begin with but as the alcohol took effect, the mood changed and arguments broke out amongst the company.
Fiscal David Barclay said that Glover had a disagreed with James McPhee in the kitchen and ended up hitting him repeatedly on his head. Some of the other guests found the pair “brawling and grappling on the floor” and the police were called in.
The court heard that the party had consumed about three litres of vodka and that predictably, Glover could remember little or nothing of the incident.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said that a witness spoke to Mr McPhee retaliating after being assaulted and hitting back at Glover.
The accused appeared from custody and pleaded guilty on indictment and also admitted an extensive record.
It was highlighted by Sheriff Andrew Berry, who observed that, over 24 years of offending, the accused had committed several acts of violence, domestic assault, and assault and robbery, and that prison was the only sentencing option.
The term will be backdated to February 17 when Glover was remanded.
