1960 Gibson 345 stereo which I bought in 1966. I retired it ten years ago when I went on to a Steinberger, a Godin LGX, a Parker Midifly and finally a Parker Fly Supreme. I have just had the Gibson refinished, refretted, rewired and new machine heads fitted. Really nice to be playing it again. Will be using it in stereo with Echoplex and Binson echoes,2 Dearmond volume/tone pedals, 2 Crybabies and a Vox AC30 along with a 1969 Fender Pro.

The system I was using last night was a Hughes and Kettner Toneman, Hughes and Kettner Replex Echo and a Dunlop Crybaby DI'D into the PA and the other pickup was through a Morely Volume/wah pedal and the Musicman amp.The only valves are in the preamp and echo and the power amp of the Musicman. My new/old system will be almost all valve.

A couple of questions... are the Crybabies going into the different amps? What year is the AC30?

Yes. The amp is 1970 with modern Jensen Alnico's. My other Vox is 1962/3 but don't know if it is worth restoring. With a Fender Twin, two Selmers, a 1962 Tremolux Fender, a Blackface Bassman and various other Marshal combo's etc I don't know what I will end up using.

You have a 62/3 Vox AC30 and you ain't sure if you should restore it? Have you gone mental?

I had a 1964 AC30 once upon a time. Great amp it was too. I bought it for £560. The company I bought it from thought it was a 70's series "Vox Sound" AC30 (unless you're an amp geek, most people won't know the difference or have a clue what I'm talking about) but when I got it home and did some research on it, it turned out to be a JMI. The speaker dates were July 1964.

The 62/3 will be worth restoring. What year is your Twin? Silver or Black face?

The Twin is Willie's and is a seventies model. The older Vox was a cream piggy back which I bought from Zebedy's uncle in 1970 and needs a complete rebuild as all components except the transformers have deteriorated badly. Ac30's were horrible amps which we cursed as the innefficient primitives they were. I bought my first one in 1964 after hearing Jeff Beck in Wick. Noisy, humming beasts. My favourite amp from that period was the Burns Orbit of which I have three. The first solid state guitar amps to hit the market in 1963. Mine are too fragile for gigging. I am thinking about using a Marshal Stereo fifty valve power amp or a modern Rocktron Velocity for the stereo Gibson but to be honest, I have yet to make up my mind.

I always loved AC30's... aye, they are noisy s, but that was the appeal for me... crank them up and play. I loved the broken sound that they produced.. roll back the volume and you could get some really nice chimey clean sounds from it.

I'm sure Dave Hilton could do a fantastic job of that AC30, you know as well as I do, that he's a genius.

I recorded a lead part on Blues D'ecosse using the AC30 along with a fan on slow speed in front of the speaker with a mic behind the fan..................the line into the vox was a sim. les paul from the variaxe & another sim. les paul from a VG8 that also went thru an AC30

I swear I fought for about 2 1/2-3 hours before I got a sound out of the gnarly old beast.................& IT WAS LOUD

I liked the combination of the AC30 & the twin...............especially if you patched across all the AC30 channels before daisy chaining to the twin or in stereo with the gibson or a guild stereo SG thang

FTR the fan was a tip I picked up from reading about a producer who worked with people like Tom Morello amongst others

I'm impressed. Wullies twin reverb is a 78. I originally bought it then and sold it on to him in the early 90's. I'm using a 98 Vox ac30 now. Best sounding amp I have had.

What make of valves are you guys using in your AC30? I know they take ECC83 and EL84 but do you have a personal favourite brand / vintage?

AC 30's use EL83 not 84. Russian valves seem to do the job, Groove Tubes are not worth the money and I haven't tried cyrogenics yet but will soon. 6L6's and KT66's are used a lot but the rest of my amps use EL34'S including the Binson power amp I have just obtained.
