Ferry to Orkney

We would like to go for a day trip to Orkney on the ferry from Scrabster.
Should I take my car or hire one the other end? Is there much walking involved getting to the ferry and at orkney to the bus, as this is very important. If anyone knows, please let me know. we hope to go in two weeks if possible.

Hmmmm, Which ferry are you going by? The Hamnavoe from Scrabster has bus links from Stromness to Kirkwall. Dont know about the other routes though. I always take my car as it works out cheaper going on the Gills sailing.

Fran, I'd echo what Royster says. Take your car and go from Gills to St Margaret's Hope, but book it early because the service is down to 12 passengers at this time of year. If you go from Scrabster to Stromness the walk from the Reception desk on the ship to the nearest car hire is no more than three hundred yards and less if they'd bring the car to the terminal. This one is a 4 minute walk but I'm sure they'd meet you if needs be - give 'em a try, anyway: http://www.stromnesscarhire.co.uk/home.html. If you go to Gills, just take your own car....... there's nothing there.

Fran - much better to listen to caithgal. The Hamnavoe will be a better idea, and that was first choice anyway.

If you take your own car, you would have to drive on to the ferry - bit risky with your driving and a bit scary for your passenger!! :eek:
