Hi
What is the best address to use for research on the IGI?

another good idea is to look at Hugh Wallis site he has listed batch nos for each country, parish etc.
This helps to find out if there is a batch to cover you area.
Also look at Phillimores Atlas it tells you when opr records started in each parish often can waste time looking and records not there for the time period you are looking for.

good luck

Thanks very much I will have a look at these, I keep thinking I have visited most of the sites for genealogy but find there are more untapped sources.
Cheers

Lynn, I really struggled with the IGI until I found the Hugh Wallis site mentioned on another forum. It's made the process a lot quicker and easier.
I've never before heard of Phillimores Atlas but I will have a look at that now.
Thanks for the info :D
Please note though that on www.familysearch.org not all data is correct. some entries are submitted by individual persons.
IGI Batch Numbers however are from the records.
as per data shown on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyCaithness.htm#PageTitle
eg
Wick Batches
C110431 1855-1867
C110432 1701-1854
C110433 1868-1875
M110431 1855-1875
M110432 1703-1800
M110435 1801-1819
M110434 1819-1854
Remember names could be recorded wrongly and not all births baptisms recorded. Not all couples married.
Happy Searching

The only difficulty is I find it a very slow process -some days worse than others! It can take ages to get from the batch no. to the query page...sometimes I have to give up :(
Is that just my pc do you think? :confused
Angela
HI, this might help with speeding up the process of going through the pages of those batches, if you type in the last name of the family that you are looking for under surname and then put in your Christening batch number or your Marraige batch number, it will take you directly to that page with the families name on it.
Hope this helps

Hopefully someone can help me with the brick wall I have come up against. My grandfather Robert Sutherland was born 1902. His mother was Sinclair Munro b1876 at Lybster Mains and his father was Robert Sutherland b1879 at Wick. I know they had 3 children, Donaldina Munro, Margaret Munro and my grand father. I know they married after the birth of their 3 children. My problem is that I can find no trace of the birth of my grandfather. My mum thinks that her dad was born away from the Caithness area but we cannot find out where. Can anyone help?
Hi Linda
I had a look on Scotlandspeople and there is only one Robert Sutherland born around 1902 in Wick .....However
My grandfather Robert Sutherland was born 1902.
This was 1901. If he was born at the end of December 1901 then his birth might not have been actually registered until the beginning of 1902. This happened a lot with marriages which took place frequently on the 31st December. It means the entry comes up in the wrong year if you keep your search parameters too close.
Of course he may not have been born in Wick !
