Depends on what you mean by viable? are you happy feeding yourself or your money orientated?

Depends on the land I should think. A thousand acres of bog with no payments would probably be a liability but then maybe thirty acres of fancy land could feed a family all year round and earn a bit. And your ethics. Intensive indoor chicken keeping can be done on a few acres and pays its way, the same land used for pigs would only support a few kept free range.
