"Shocking" and "disgraceful" conduct said sheriff tells student
A YOUNG Wick student who alarmed a middle-aged woman who was on a night out in the town and attempted to hit police officers, was slammed by a sheriff yesterday.
Sheriff Andrew Berry described Kasim Ahmed’s conduct as “shocking” and “absolutely disgraceful”.
Ahmed, 21, admitted charges of assault and threatening or abusive behaviour, at Wick Sheriff Court. He was ordered to carry out 75 hours unpaid community work.
The court heard that the incidents occurred at The Shore, Wick, on August 31, last year while people were queuing for taxis in the early hours. Mary Thomson had been out with family and friends and was a complete stranger to the accused.
David Barclay, prosecuting said that Ahmed, of 31A Kinnaird Street, Wick, suddenly began abusing Ms Thomson and threatened to assault her.
He added: “She was alarmed and fled to hide behind a parked car to avoid him.”
When police arrived, Ahmed, who was “very intoxicated”, immediately attempted to punch the two constables but his efforts didn’t connect.
Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that the accused had little recollection of what had happened and was deeply ashamed of his actions.
Sheriff Berry said it was “absolutely disgraceful” that the victim was subjected to such abuse while she as out on a social occasion, particularly to the extent that she was driven to hide from Ahmed who then twice tried to assault the police which was “equally shocking”.
The sheriff commented that had the accused had not been a first offender, an alternative option would have been open to him.
