Thurso teen remanded after he also admitted spitting at another constable
A THURSO teenager threatened to put a knife to a policeman’s neck after spitting at another officer, a north court was told yesterday.
Eighteen-year-old Dominic Long was remanded at Wick Sheriff Court after he admitted charges of assault and threatening behaviour and an extensive record.
The trouble flared after police went to speak to Long in Provost Sinclair Road, Thurso, in the early hours of Saturday.
David Barclay, prosecuting, said that the accused was quiet, initially, but resented the officers’ involvement with him, became agitated and reacted by spitting in Constable Christopher’s Mackenzie’s face.
The second incident occurred while Long, who appeared to have been drinking, was being processed at the charge bar of Wick police station.
Mr Barclay continued: “He again exhibited his displeasure at the proceedings and registered it by shouting and swearing and threatening to put a blade against the neck of Constable James Swan although, given the place in which it was made, he would not have been able to carry it out.”
Solicitor Ken Ferguson said that the accused was currently unemployed and had taken steps to get counselling about his lifestyle, in the hope it would help him get a job.
Appealing for bail Mr Ferguson added: “My client is anxious to avoid custody, today.”
Sheriff Andrew Berry rejected the request and remanded Long, of 7 Ormlie Crescent, Thurso, commenting that the charges were “very serious” and the public had to be protected. In addition, he pointed out that the accused was currently on bail and subject to a deferred sentence.
The sheriff will see a background report before sentencing Long on February 21.
