Berriedale Braes collision a mystery court told

THE cause of an accident at a Caithness blackspot was inexplicable, the local sheriff court heard today.
The crash, on the notorious Berriedale Braes, led to one of the drivers being charged with careless driving.
Double glazing salesman, Josuva Selvanesan, 38, of 26 Castlegreen Road, Thurso, admitted the offence and was fined £180, at Wick Sheriff Court today. He also incurred three penalty points.
The collision between his northbound 4 x 4 and a southbound car happened on the hairpin bend, in the early evening of May 18, last year. Weather was dry and overcast.
David Barclay, prosecuting, said that speed had been ruled out as a factor – both vehicles were travelling slowly as required by the nature of the bend. In addition, a motorist travelling behind father-of-two Selvanesan, who was heading home from a business trip, was not aware of anything being amiss, until the accident.
Mr Barclay continued: “For reasons that are not entirely clear, the accused’s vehicle veered across the roadway and collided with the southbound car whereby both vehicles sustained frontal damage.”
Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Selvanesan, himself, was unaware of the cause and added: “There was no reason why he didn’t maintain his vehicle on his own side of the roadway.”
Passing sentence, for what he described as “a moment’s inadvertence on an unusual stretch of road by any A9 standards”, Sheriff Andrew Berry took into account that the accused was a first offender and had accepted responsibility for the offence.
