O2 did a recent update in December which effects Samsung galaxy, HTC and probably others. If you send a message even a short "hello mum" and add an emoticon your message auto converts to MMS and you are charged 29p. As you can imagine you can run up a massive bill quickly. there is no way of deactivating it on the phone (samsung G4). You can simply not add emoticons and your txts remain free. I have taken this up with O2 and they are unhelpfull the emoticons appeared on the keyboard in the last update so it is definateley O2 that has instigated this.

You can download go sms pro app for free and go sms pro emoji plug and you get free texts icluding emoticons sent free.
Its quite good and easy to use.

No change here. Still sends as a standard SMS message on O2.
