Passenger was thrown through rear car window

A SUTHERLAND teenager was speeding when he lost control of his car late one night, Wick Sheriff Court heard yesterday, in an accident a sheriff said could have had serious consequences.
The vehicle left the A836 near Strathy, rolled over and over and came to rest in a field, the impact propelling one of Michael Findlay’s two passengers through the back window.
Findlay, a student, admitted a reduced charge of careless driving. The 18-year-old was fined £225 and was banned from driving for three months.
All three occupants escaped serious injury in the accident which occurred on August 9. David Barclay, prosecuting, said that the accused momentarily lost control of his vehicle due to his speed, while negotiating a right-hand bend.
The fiscal depute continued: “He over-corrected and the car left the roadway. Findlay and his two female passengers escaped with nothing more than cuts and bruises and general soreness.”
Solicitor Neil Wilson said that Findlay of Kirkton Farm, Melvich, was “very grateful” for the fact that no-one had been seriously injured.
Mr Wilson added that the accused appreciated that losing his licence would cause him difficulties, not only in getting to college in Thurso where he is studying fabrication and welding but with the new regulations for young drivers under which he automatically reverts to learner status.
Sheriff Andrew Berry, who observed that insurance would also pose a problem, commented that it was “miraculous” that the occupants had escaped the serious injury and death that was sometimes the result of such accidents.
