Does anyone know of a, preferably free, utility which will remove this insidious browser hijacker. Have looked at a few tools which will "scan" your PC and then ask you to pay for privilege of telling you what you already know

Try Spybot Search & Destroy:

I frequently recommend Malwarebytes (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/malwarebytes_anti_malware.html) for such items

I have used both of the above and they are both very good.

remove any other anti virus or spyware detection prog first.

combofix wont like those 2 being on there.

you don't need to do the reg edit thing.

don't forget SAFEMODE with networking
and pref via a Ethernet cable rather than wireless

if you want help

put teamviewer on it and PM me the ID/password
and i'll do it.

Sad to say that none of above methods remove V9.com from PC. Ran regedit and removed all mentions of V9.com and rebooted and it was still there. Installed Combofix, removed AVG, Glairy & CCleaner from my PC. Rebooted in Safe Mode and let Combofix run. Took dogs for walk and when I returned it had finished scanning and had output a report. Rebooted and V9 still there!

remove the system restore backups

can you get teamviewer on via a penstick from another PC
then PM or text me the ID & password

or PM me where you are
see if we are near each other.

as a point you did download combofix using another PC?

ah you have AVG

look for and delete the folder called avg$ or $avg

remove all previous system restore points [turn it off]

have you only one login to the PC which is you & your are an administrator?

if so create a new login called admin [ make it an administrator of the pc.

log out of your login

log in as admin

CHANGE your status to limited user [or NOT an administrator]

then download a fresh copy of combofix to a penstick from ANOTHER PC.

reboot in safe mode with networking under the ADMIN login

run combo fix again.

In addition to malwarebytes, I can recommend Ccleaner, Revo Uninstaller, Adwcleaner, IObit uninstaller. Manual ininstallation is also possible: http://soft2secure.com/knowledgebase/v9

Dump windows and use Linux. Linux Mint is a good one to learn with.

You can down load the ISO. Burn it and boot to linux from the CD.
That allows you to try it out without effecting your original operating system. (bear in mind linux will run much much faster once installed).
