This is what happens if you ingest a little too much Maltitol. It Replaces sugar in many sweets and chocolats and is advertised as safe for Diabetics. So if want to know what happens if eat too much, (this can be as little as two sweets), then just ask any Diabetic. (mind you it does make a good laxative)

If you are are Diabetic and want a Safe Sugar Ssustitute then look out for Stevia as this has No side effects. It is available in Supermarkets and I am hoping that it will replace such sweetners as Maltitol as a sugar substitute in Chocolates and sweets.

Hahaha - Revenge in a sweet....

But seriously, we should read labels - I had this experience years ago eating sugar-free sweets and the reviewer got my symptoms down to a t!
We should avoid this sweetener and Aspartame (which is banned in some countries, not here).

Aspartame. (Phenylalanine), that is something else entirely, I personally would not touch it with a Barge Pole. :-
