Accused repaid cash she stole from friend
A NURSE, who swindled a friend out of more than £4000 of her savings, has escaped a jail sentence.
Gayle Magennis was instead ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid community work within eight months when she appeared for sentence at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.
The 30-year-old used her friendship with the unnamed friend to repeatedly “borrow” her debit card and siphoned the cash from an ATM in the town. The card was returned to its rightful place on each occasion until the unauthorised withdrawals aroused suspicion.
The court heard that Magennis, of 76 Seaforth Avenue, Wick, was desperate after spiralling into debt. Her problems became so serious that her wages were being regularly arrested by a finance company and she couldn’t make ends meet.
A work colleague stepped in and loaned the £4,600 which the court was informed, yesterday, had been repaid.
Magennis admitted stealing the money between March and June, this year, in what Sheriff Andrew Berry described as “a monumental breach of trust which was unlikely to ever be restored”.
It was stated that the accused's future employment had yet to be decided.
