Head kick left victim in pool of blood
A drink-fuelled assault in a Thurso street, on Christmas Day, left a man in a pool of blood with a broken jaw. The victim, Stuart Brown, needed an emergency operation after he was kicked in the head by six-foot Darren Christie.
The Aberdeen man admitted the assault to severe injury, on indictment, when he appeared at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.Christie, 23, will return to court for sentence on October 4.
Sheriff Andrew Berry was told that the incident in the early hours, stemmed from a minor brush, earlier, involving a nudge or push and a brief exchange of words between the two, in the Holborn Hotel, Thurso, where Mr Brown was socialising with his girlfriend and didn't know the accused.
But, that difference appeared to end amicably, with the two men shaking hands.
However, said David Barclay, prosecuting, said that matters didn’t end there. Mr Brown and his girlfriend duly left the premises and were followed shortly afterwards, by Christie, of 45F Powis Place, Aberdeen.
There was a brief resumption of the earlier “niggle” and when the girlfriend, who had walked on, in Princes Street, looked back to check that her boyfriend was following, she saw he was on the ground.
Mr Barclay said: “It was at this point that the accused kicked Mr Brown once in the head. He thought he was unconscious, briefly, and when he came round, he felt that his teeth were no longer in line and reckoned he had a broken jaw. Police officers, summoned to the scene, found Mr Brown still on the ground, his head in a pool of blood of blood.”
He was treated at Caithness General Hospital, initially, but, after the fracture to the lower jaw was confirmed, he was transferred to Raigmore Hospital at Inverness and admitted as an emergency patient. In the ensuing operation, several plates were inserted. Cuts to his tongue were also treated.
Mr Brown was discharged, two days later but it was six weeks before he was fit to return to work. When seen by police initially, Christie stated: “Some boy was fighting with me, so I fought back.” In the formal interview, however, he expressed concern for Mr Brown and admitted to having drunk five pints of beer and two or three shots of spiced rum, earlier.
Mr Barclay added that when the interview was concluded, Christie became “extremely emotional” and was “apparently regretful” at what he had happened.
Sheriff Berry called for a background report and will hear mitigation when the accused returns to court for sentence next month.
