Road closed as police accident investigators start their inquiries

A 36 year old local man lost his life last night following a two vehicle collision on the A965 Kirkwall to Stromness road.
The accident happened just after 5pm approximately one mile east of Finstown. The emergency services converged on the scene.
The occupants of the second vehicle which consisted of two adults and two young children were taken to the Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall and later discharged with minor injuries.
The immediate family of the deceased driver, who was the sole occupant of his vehicle, have been informed. Police Scotland Accident Investigators from the Divisional Roads Policing Unit in Dingwall are travelling to Orkney to conduct a full collision investigation.
The road is currently closed to all traffic and this is likely to remain the case until later on Saturday. Local diversions are in place and no significant traffic delays are anticipated.
Police in Orkney would like to hear from anyone using this road at the time who may have seen the accident and would urge any witnesses to contact them on the 101 non emergency number.
