Agreed evidence will reduce witness numbers
A ROAD traffic expert has been consulted by the defence solicitor in the case of a Wick man accused of causing the death of a motor cyclist by careless driving.
That emerged, at Wick Sheriff Court, today, during an update on case preparations for the trial of Anthony John Palmer.
The 57-year-old denies failing to keep a proper lookout and turning his van into the path of the motor cyclist, Brent Larnach, resulting in a collision on the A99 Wick-Latheron road, at Borrowston, which claimed his life.
The solicitor, Fiona MacDonald, told Sheriff John Rafferty yesterday, that she had a couple of questions for the expert concerning his report and would give an update at the next court hearing. It is not known whether the expert, from the Central Belt, will give evidence.
A considerable amount of evidence in the case has been agreed by the prosecution and the defence, which will shorten the witness list from an original 35, to 11. A joint minute of agreement is expected to be finalised at the forthcoming hearing, on Tuesday, when a trial date might be fixed.
Palmer, of 11 Malcolm Street, Wick, was present in the dock, at yesterday’s brief court proceedings.
Mr Larnach, 28, known as Freddie, died at the scene of the accident, on a long straight, a few miles from his home at Mid-Clyth where he lived with his father Noel.
The deceased, a derrick man with Awilco Drilling, and his girlfriend, Leanne Sutherland, had been building a house next to his family bungalow where they planned to live with her two children.
