WICK's Territorial Army base is one of seven in the firing line in a Scottish closures plan announced this week by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond. The long established H.Q, in Dempster Street, will end its proud connection with the royal burgh, along with similar centre closures at Dunoon, Keith and Kirkcaldy, Glasgow Edinburgh and Dunfermline.
But the consolation in the plans, unveiled by the minister, is that he is to recruit an extra 12,000 new reservists across the UK with new pension, healthcare and leave perks, bringing the number of stand-by soldiers rising from 20,000 to 30,000 by 2018. The reservists will get more training and better equipment.
