Work to establish if potentially explosive gas from a former rubbish tip in Wick poses a threat to the public starts today. The dump at Newtown hill was turned into a community woodland area in 1996. The council want make sure methane from buried waste isn't building up underground. Work on the site will last for around 4 weeks but it will be monitored for a further 6 months
