Accused tricked assistants in cash exchanges
TWO Romanians who defrauded shops – one in Wick - will be sentenced next month.
Ion Munteanu, 20, and Dorel Muntean, 29, pleaded guilty to a considerably reduced number of charges, when they re-appeared from custody at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.
Munteanu, of 203 Heatherly Road, Rotherham, obtained £100 from Simpson’s store in High Street, Wick. His co-accused, who lives at 47 St Anne’s Road, Rotherham, secured £40 from the Co-op store in Alness, by a similar deception.
The offences, on April 27, occurred when they created confusing by requesting various cash exchanges involving different denominations of coins and notes. The pair, who have records, were said to have embarked on the frauds, described as “wholly unacceptable”, after running short of money on a trip to the Highlands to acquire a car.
They were again remanded, pending sentence on June 14 when Sheriff Andrew Berry will see background reports.
He asked fiscal Andrew Laing to investigate Muntean’s entitlement to be in this country as he had been previously deported.
