Dounreay bosses have submitted plans to Highland Council for a 100 million pound facility for the treatment and storage of intermediate level radioactive waste. They say the three new buildings will be a core part of the on going decommissioning of the Caithness site. They also maintain that until a national disposal facility is created they have to find their own methods of dealing with hazardous materials.

Unfortunately this is not going to help current funding, job loss crisis. This facility is essential to overall decommissioning and has been in the planning for years.

Has the penny finally dropped up there in Caithness, Dounreay is going to close. Councillors please wake up county is heading into ghost land.

I don't think the penny has dropped yet Nomad, at a stroke of a pen things can change drastically (NDA Funding Crisis), conversely it can go the other way if all the rumours around the county are true.

Sad state of affairs, we need to have a more diverse business infrastructure, preferably hi-technology type businesses for higher wages. We don't want to end up just retail based. Mind you it seems to have worked for Inverness!

The whole of the UK is now service/retail based, there is little or no manufacturing et al jobs out there - they have gone. The only engineering that is left is to support the oil industry.
