Remark led to four-month jail sentence

Jason Crompton took exception to a comment a man made about his girlfriend and decided to register his displeasure with his fists.
He punched John Begg repeatedly and head-butted him, Wick Sheriff Court heard today.
Crompton, 39, admitted a charge of assault when he appeared from custody and was jailed for four months.
The incident occurred at a house in Nicolson Street, Wick, on March 23. Mr Begg was said to have was said to have made “a quip” about Crompton’s girlfriend with whom he had previously had a relationship.
David Barclay, prosecuting, said that the accused regarded the comment as an insult and assaulted Mr Begg who bled profusely from a head wound. However, it looked worse than it was, at the time and simply required some cleaning up.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said that Crompton had lost his temper over the comment which he found “insulting and provoking”.
Sheriff Andrew Berry said that the accused’s record was long and varied and had included a serious charge for assault. The latest offence had been committed while he subject to a community payback order.
The four-month sentence was backdated from May 1 when Crompton, of Wellington Street, Wick, was apprehended.
