View Full Version : Broadband Speeds
What type of broadband sppeds are orgers getting on average?
I know the Towns are pretty well served, I am more interested in the rural areas.
Its very up and down at my location anywhere between 300k at a busy time to 4mB when quiet.
Was thinking about changing to a satellite service that can provide 20mB, but its not exactly cheap.

You get what you pay. The cheaper a broadband deal is the worse the service and customer service will be.
usually about 6.8 mb in the evening s.
Are you in town or rural?

Unfortunately it really is not as simple as that. There are multiple other variables and even without them there is no linear relationship between cost and service in broadband.
Mine's OK. I don't know the measurement 'cos I'm not a geek. And I never download anything

I believe Flynn is talking about customer service and not the product (broadband internet).
Obviously there are many, many variables to the quality of your broadband connection.

I assume that is what he means seeing as that is what he said, I still stand by what I said though.
BTW I do like this thread though. It would be good to have speeds from across the county.
Getting 11.7Mb at the moment but that is on a fibre optic line.

2.3Mb at the moment but often below 0.5Mb at busy times. Rural location but about 100m from local exchange.
At the present I am getting 5MB from Thurso Exchange.
My Son is getting 6MB from the Barrock Exchange

Making the assumption that you aren't in Caithness - that's not a terribly helpful stat without a location.
Bit like saying " We get free beer every Thursday here".

Apologies my location is as follows:
UKCS Block 21/01a, 156 km North East of Aberdeen.
hope that helps

Buchan Alpha? Not sure how it is relevant to broadband speeds in the area but okay.

Nice and Ambiguous that is and I am sure that will make mi16 very happy. :D

Which is why I did not post my location the first time around as it was of no relevance.
With hindsight, I should not have posted my speed either but hey ho.
As I kicked off the thread I stated my home speeds.

Dont see what is ambiguous about it, in fact it is pretty specific, short of listing the GPS co-ordinates.

I get 0.75 Mbps :( and live approx 2 miles from the Barrock exchange. Have contacted my ISP on several occasions to be told that's the fastest speed available due to distance from exchange.

There must be more to it as we are about 2.2 miles from the Watten exchange and get 2.5 - 3 Mbps and sometimes faster. Who is your ISP?

You get what you pay. The cheaper a broadband deal is the worse the service and customer service will be.That's my experience too. I used AOL (for weird reasons - don't ask why!) a few years ago. It was essentially free, but the speed was quite patchy.
My current ISP costs me a lot more, but it's much faster and more reliable, and I've been with them for about three years.
Thought y'all might like this result - 2350hrs - 29/04/2013 -independent Uswitch test site - in the centre of Wick .

Here's one from the recent past - 18982
I noticed that BT have pushed the RFS date of the Wick exchange forward from 31/05/2013 to 31/07/2013 - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NSWIC Thurso is showing as ADSL2+ enabled but not every connection is, just those with certain ISPs. It was supposed to be every connection by 31/05/2013 but maybe that's changed also.
Nevermind eh rural areas are quite happy to subsidise broadband in urban areas while receiving crappy service.

They've done a similar thing with the fibre upgrade in my neighbourhood.
