DOUNREAY'S operators have had to go back to the drawing board after the expensive failure of a new security fence around the one-time hub of the Uks fast reactor programme. A year last December, £7 million of taxpayers money was spent on putting up a new perimeter fence in line with a nationwide step-up in security arrangements at all UK nuclear sites.
THE brother of a Caithness runner in the Boston Marathon has spoken of his relief to learn he completed the course unscathed. Thurso exile Stephen Cassels and his wife Alison had both finished their race some time before the carnage caused by two explosions left the event being remembered for all the wrong reasons.

PLANS to treat Caithness dementia sufferers outwith the county are "unacceptable" That was the view expressed this week at a meeting of Thurso Community Council. Members are unhappy that local dementia patents, who require acute assessment or have complex needs, will no longer be treated at the Harmsworth County hospital in Wick. The nine-bed assessment unit closed last July due to a lack of staff and attempts to hire enough personnel to reopen the facility, failed.
A CONCESSION charity has been dubbed "deranged" by a councillor in a fierce put-down after it voiced opposition to a new windfarm in the Highlands. The John Muir Trust lodged objections to Highland Council against the proposed 26 turbines on the Glencassley Estate in Sutherland, claiming it would ruin valuable "wild land".
A CAITHNESS couple got a huge surprise when they met Grand National winning jockey Ryan Mania on a trip to the Borders. Alistair Grant and his partner Sheena Mowat frrom John O' Groats were delighted to meet the jockey who became the first Scot in 117 years to win the famous horse race.
THE league championship may be out of reach but there is still plenty to play for as Wick Academy make their final away trip to Fraserburgh, tomorrow before a run of four home games to finish the season. Ramsden's Cup qualification is still within the Scorries sights with the top two teams in the league with entry level SFA licences being put into the hat along with 30 SFL teams for the first round in July.
