Does anyone know the meaning and the origin of the name Geise? I see that it is a farm, a burn, a moss, and a newlands but where did the word originate and what does it mean in English?. Geise is also my German Grandparents name. I was just wondering if the word in Scottish and the word in German has some common origin? Does the word Geise have a meaning in Caithness history?

Not sure about Caithness, but over here in Orkney, the name Geise is associated with an infestation or plague of troublesome migratory birds that arrive in the winter and play hell with the grass, and cr@p all over the place. You are right that Geise can be found on farms, at burns and on moss, but the biggest problems is on newlands, particularly new grass.

There was a Viking bakery in the area, around 1040 A.D. The uncouth clientele yelled "Geise a loff!" at the serving wench, when shopping there.

The Tourist Board has all the evidence, but they're covering it up, to benefit Orkney's tourist trade.
