I was saddened to hear of the death of Professor Sir Robert Edwards today. Thanks to this man and his partner Patrick Steptoe many many families have experienced the joy of having a child who may not otherwise have been able to do so. Louise Brown was born down the road from where I grew up and I have always followed the careers and lives of these two men since seeing the headlines in the Oldham Chronicle of the birth of the first test tube baby all those years ago. True pioneers.
