POLICE yesterday remained keen to trace two men seen near where a young father was found dead in Wick at the weekend. Officers are continuing their inquiries into the death o William McGough whose body was recovered from the river near his flat, early on Saturday morning. Detectives launched a full-scale investigation with searches along the riverbank in bins and in the garden of the 30 year-old’s home in Victoria Place.
A £146 million project to deliver high-speed broadband across the Highlands and Islands, could be “a game changer for the far north” Eann Sinclair, manager of the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership, was speaking after the initiative was announced at a press conference in Inverness yesterday. It was described as “the UK’s most complex and challenging broadband project ever”. Work is expected to get underway shortly, and finish in 2016.
A CAITHNESS man has raised £2,600 for a sight charity based in Aberdeen, after being affected by vision problems himself. William ‘Billy’ Manson, chairman of Halkirk Village Council used a 65th birthday party to encourage friends and relatives to raise money for Saving Sight.
A MOVE to ensure Highland pensioners remain sprightly by taking up exercise – like martial arts – could extend lives and reduce the chances of dementia, a pensioners’ leader has predicted. Highland Council has earmarked £175,000 to spend on encouraging more senior citizens to take up leisure activities or get involved in volunteer or community work.
TO be appointed as the youngest head greenkeeper in Scotland, James Tayler said that landing his dream job feels like sinking a hole in one. The 21-year-old who has been working at Wick Golf Club for almost a year, was recently named the youngest to be put in charge off any golf course in the country.

But their 40th anniversary celebrations were capped, after they beat nine other groups to claim the UK award at a ceremony at the House of Lords.
CAITHNESS needs more apprentices in the next few years as the county anticipates a boom in the construction industry. That was the claim made at last week’s meeting of the Dounreay Stakeholder Group in Thurso. Members argued that every encouragement should be given to secure more apprenticeships as work continues to decommission Dounreay and new schools and council offices are to be built in Wick.
