Well, who would like to be a Cypriot at the moment? Very soon the PM will have to make a decision whether to go with the EU, or Russia to tackle their huge debt deficit. I can see that it would be a golden opportunity for the Russians to acquire their oil and gas; military bases and money laundering, safe haven.

It's a tough call. On the one hand they can choose the Union of Soviet Socialist Russia, or on the other hand maybe the United States of Socialist Europe! Heads either of these two win; tails Cyprus loses. Not to mention the rest of us.

Glad I am not a Brit living and settled in Cyprus, my Caithness cousin has settled there, and has a wee business. I am worried for her.

Yes, I can imagine Golach. My best friends are Greek Cypriots and they are very fearful for their family and country. It used to be such a beautiful, wonderful place to live, but in less than 10 years in the EU, everything has changed so much. I hope there's better news soon to allay your concerns about your cousin. :(

Course not, Flynn! ;)

Here's a suggestion I'd like to make. How about, and if Britain can rake up the money, we cover Cyprus's debt, in exchange for their oil and gas? We could recoup the money they owe by running a very profitable business; creating jobs and helping their and our economy. When the debt and cost of the installations are paid out of the profits, we could hand a generous percentage of the income to the Cypriots? Partners, kinda thing. That way, everyone would benefit and it would be a much better option for Cyprus than the other two. Or am I dreaming, a-g-a-i-n? :D

Banks to remain closed until at least Tuesday. They don't get it, the longer the banks are closed the more catastrophic the run will be. What would you do if you were denied access to your account for days? Damn well make sure it didn't happen again!

It doesn't. It was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Soviet Union broke up, and all those satellite republics that comprised that union are now independent countries. There is only Russia now. It's the same as what would happen if Scotland went independent, the United Kingdom would no longer exist.

If Russia is just Russia, it's only waiting for its little secessionist kittens in a sack to fight amongst themselves, or each other, after which Mother Russia will cleave the grateful survivors to her bosom. That's why most English, in their heart of hearts, want Scottish Independence to happen. Expose Scots to life outside the protective umbrella, wait till they've realised that they can't blame "Wasteminster" any more when Brigadoon goes trotters up, and then take 'em back on rather more acceptable (to the Union) terms.

Whatever happens, the USSR and the UK will always be with us.

A rose by any other name......

Cyprus could turn this on its head really. They should be playing the EU off against Moscow.
The EU, NATO & the US really don't want too much Russian control in Cyprus and it's resources.

I'm sure Russia will be happy to help, they need a Mediterranean port in order to extend their naval power. This isn't going to please the EU Gaulleiters one bit.

What about the possibility of China or Japan throwing into the pot? that would have some impact on the Eurozone and given that there are natural resources in Cypriot terrirtory they could possibly end up being in control of that too....the possibilities are starting to get worrying
