Hi,

I've got a caithness flag Harth which got govered in black sticky tar like substance when my chimmney leakes water in the rains and wind last week. ANy idea what I could use to clean it and get it back to how it looked? I took a picture but don't seem to be able to attach it here.

if it's tarry it should respond to oven cleaner or something similar. Be careful with that stuff though - it can take yer skin off.

Tarry substances are best removed with paraffin. Obviously you should use it sparingly, keep a window open, and make sure all traces are gone before trying to light the fire again. Otherwise you might be able to post a first hand account of the response time of the fire brigade.

Have a chat with Caithness Chemicals, they sell slate oil etc for flagstones and should be able to help with the correct cleaning medium to prevent marking.
