How many people here would buy an engagement/dress ring from:
a)Argos
b)online
c) local jeweller

Why might you opt to make such a purchase in this way? What are the key factors?

I bought my wedding dress from a small local shop...it was a simple white linen frock with lace overlay...then we eloped to Jamaica, and got married on the beach. Cost of dress: £25.00 Cost of holiday...£1500 Cost of memories...priceless!

Tristan will get this: "okay! I'll wear the ***** hat!!!"

Hubby gets all my jewelry from the jewelers in Thurso, he has no preference to which shop, just which has what he is looking for at the time. I have to admit he is very good in his choices:D

The wife swears by Hendersons in main st, Inverness. Reasonably priced quality jewellery she says. :D

Aurora in Orkney and Colin Campbell in Inverness both do bespoke jewellery.

A friend of mine had a boyfriend who bought a one carat diamond and proposed to her. She turned him down flat- because he bought the ring from Argos!

My wedding ring was made especially for me at Colin Campbells in Inverness but mostly would by from Macbeths in Thurso.

I love unusual rings and found a shop on the high street, Fortrose I think.
Cant remember the name but they sell paintings and have a wee coffee shop with comfy chairs as well as jewlery.
If we decided to do anything commitment wise thats where we'll be going.
As I've never had an eternity ring thats what we'll be doing.
Staight to the point,no messing about:lol:

I like Cormack in Wick for anything other than diamonds- which tend to be very small and rather expensive.

My engagement ring came from Hamilton and Inches in Edinburgh and was custom made- and I got to see it made- just in case anyone tried to cheat me with an Argos ring in a posh box.

Sweetest story I heard was a young couple who went to Orkney on a day trip and got their rings from one of the jewellers there- the diamonds weren't huge- but the love was. Ahhhhh!!!!!

Personally i would buy mine from a Jewlers.. I got Engaged in 2004..Still not married ..Boo Hoo!!

I think they have better selection that cataloges and i wouldn feel safe buying it online.

My engagement ring was too big for me so i used Cormack jewlers in wick to get my ring sent off for sizing..If it got lost i got the ring Insired anyway!:)

The only jewelry I have purchased on line has been Ortak when I was adding to my collection as it is not readily available where I live.
With regards to engagement, wedding, eternity rings it's all part of the fun going from jeweller to jeweller trying on and then discarding.
Many years ago when looking for an engagement ring I saw what I thought would be perfect, dragged my partner to the shop only to discover that when it was on the finger it looked completely wrong!
For such personal items it must be a specialist shop every time.

i buy most of my rings or necklaces from Earnest Jones in Inverness. They have good quality gold/silver and staff are more than helpful. I have bought some items from various outlets in caithness, but find that Inverness has different choices compared to Thurso/Wick.

I got my first engagment ring from Earnest Jones in Aberdeen. I had to return it twice as the diamond kept falling out, the third time it happened I took it back and took a freaker so got my money back. Then went to Finnies in Aberdeen and got a totally different ring which I love and have never had a problem with. Got our wedding rings from Regency in Thurso and again never had a problem.

I honestly don't think you can beat the prices and quality on gems tv - I've had a lot of stuff from them over the last couple of years and have not returned anything

i got my engagement ring from the golden arcade in Glasgow Sauchiehall st, a million jewellers to tempt you from your hard earned. then we got our wedding rings made at the Ringmaker in Glasgow - expensive but well worth it. plus great service both times. mind you i was living down there then.

so now back in gods county i'd go for the local jewellers. TAKE NOTE MR CHARLATANS.....:D

when is the tradition to get the eternity ring?

I got my first engagement ring from Cameo's which I chose myself. Things never worked out but I got to keep the ring :D

Next time I got engaged, I proposed and gave my man a ring which I ordered from Royal mint - thankfully I sneakily asked him what he thought of the one I was going to buy and he said he didn't like it, but really liked another. I scored as it was a lot cheaper. hehe. After I proposed, he went out and bought me a ring which he bought locally and its one I would've chosen myself.

My wedding ring was bought in a jewellers in Inverurie - I saw the one I liked and got them to order it in my size rather than re-sizing the one they had. My hubby's wedding ring came from McBeth's.

If I was to buy a ring just now, I'd get it from Sheila Fleets - or from someone that stocked her stuff locally - she has some lovely items. I almost bought one when I was over in Orkney, but it was £700 and I couldn't justify spending that much on an every day ring.
