NASA warned the would be a 'near miss' with an asteroid today. Russia completely upstages them by being hit with a meteorite shower. Up to 250 injured and buildings damaged in the Urals:

So NASA report a near miss asteroid and Russia completely upstages them!

From the footage it seems like the meteor didn't do any damage itself. It was the sonic bang that hit the city that caused damages and injuries... I wonder if the rock had actually hit the ground what kind of a disaster could be...

Interesting that the Nasa had predicted a near miss, possible that was a piece of that 'near-miss asteroid'?

No it wasnt a piece of the near miss asteroid. This meteor was traveling in a North to South direction, the asteroid is travelling in a South to North direction. Its not only NASA that predicted a near miss, the whole astronomical community,Russia included knew about this near miss and its orbit and have been reporting about it for about a year.

It seems some bits did survive to the ground. One report pointed out there's not only a large repository of weapons-grade plutonium, but also a very large stockpile of nerve gas scheduled for disposal, in that region of Russia. Good thing it didn't hit either of those. I wonder what the odds are of the near-miss asteroid and this thing coming down in an populated region on the same day? BTW something around this size hits the earth every day on average. It's just rare for one to be caught on film or cause damage.

I wonder what the odds are of the near-miss asteroid and this thing coming down in an populated region on the same dayThe probability of that happening is exactly zero. A near miss asteroid will never come down!

Something like todays event,a meteor of approx 10 tons happens every 5 years on average, not every day.The last similar sized event previous to this was 2008 when one exploded over Sudan
and the near earth asteriod 2012 DA14 is in a proven orbit which doesnt all of a sudden deviate or come down to collide with the earth.Orbits dont work like that.

Conspiracy theorists reckon that the meteorite was shot down by a Russian missile.

Yeah right. No nation on Earth has a weapons system that can target and take down something at an altitude of 30 miles and travelling at 30km/s.

You cant shoot down a meteorite as a meteorite is the result of meteor reaching the ground. You can shoot down a meteor though and then it becomes a meteorite.
No warning time to shoot down a meteor of this small size, nothing detects it.The first warning you get is when it starts to enter the atmosphere so a few seconds is not enough time
to launch missiles.I heard International Resue Launched a Nudge the meteor out of the way device from Thunderbird 2.Brains is currently working on a faster responce time as it was a bit
of a close shave.
