View Full Version : Wick Sheriff Court - the same surnames still appear week after week?

Over a period of many years, I looked at the reports from Wick Sheriff Court in the Courier and the Groat, and I despaired when I saw the same surnames (and members of the same families) appearing week after week, month after month, and year after year....

Like most others, I have no failsafe recipe for halting the spread of violent crime (and gratuitous violence) between generations, and between siblings of the same generation....

I shouldn't claim this as a healthy development, but, in recent months, I've noticed many new surnames appearing in the lists of defendants. Many of these surnames are not indigenous to the County, or indeed to the Country. Should this new, more heterogeneous, class of defendant be vilified, or should we be thankful that the downward spiral of criminal activity in some local families may have decreased? Is my previous question anything other than wishful thinking? Am I wrong in hoping that some of my peers from my schooldays have been somehow rescued from the life of incarceration that they seemed destined for?

The law exists to protect the "haves" from the "have nots". Therefore society will always prejudice the "have nots".

Why not? the names are in the paper for them breaking the law so why not speak about it? Anyway no names have been mentioned by anyone!

As SIS says its the same names in there week upon week, and every time they are locked up in a cell, appear in court, on bail pending background reports, put on probation, sent to prison, its costing us taxpayers money :confused

@SIS, I doubt your peers have been rescued

And why does the Groat (and the great copier Donaldson) only ever report the criminal cases - why not the civil ones? They are also publicly listed; the public can sit in on them; and anyone can ask for the outcome. So, for example, this week we have: Hutchinson v Saxon. Allan v Webber. The Chief Constable v Scott C Lindsay. And before someone spits the dummy out over mentioning names, they are all publicly available here:http://www.scotcourts.gov.uk/coming-to-court/location-information?loc=Wick%20Sheriff%20Court%20and%20Jus tice%20of%20the%20Peace%20Court

But both the Groat and Donaldsn select what they write about there was a case listed in Edinburgh High Court of a Caithness man who got Seven Years Jail ,for serious crimes but never mentioned once by Donaldson or the Groat.double Standards I would say this case took place last November and Donaldson knew about it.

surely if they didn't misbehave then they wouldn't have their names in the paper simples.

Not everybody who ends up in court (and subsequently the papers) is there because of misbehaviour*, many end up there simply because the broke an unjust law.

*My definition of misbehaviour is doing harm to others against their will.

Well.... The obvious start is the drug laws.... If I want to take drugs why shouldn't I, what harm am doing to others? How often do you see people in court simply because they had a bit of cannabis in their pocket?

If you want to know my position on any other laws then just ask.

I disagreed, sarcastically, with the rubbish of yours that I quoted. Quoted again below. I don't give a toss about your definition of anything thanks.

Depends what "unjust" means. Are these idiots unable to avoid having cannabis in their pocket? Does it grow wild in there?

See the problem is; Society makes the laws. You cannot pick and choose which suit you and which don't. IMO if you reject some laws you have no right to expect to be protected by others.

So... What you are saying is that back when homosexuality was illegal if you where homosexual you automatically lost all your rights?

The law at the time is what society wants isn't it?

It used to be legal to own another person or burn a witch. We have much more sensible laws now.

If its a law of the land then you have to obey that's how it works. we may not like some of the laws but tough. I don't think there is a country in the world that you can pick and choose which law you obey

I'm not advocating law breaking, just saying that some things people end up in court for are unjust & that you can't class all lawbreakers as troublemakers.

When we arrived in Caithness I remember a piece on the front page of the Groat. It made me laugh and was a source of amusement for my friends in Manchester for whom the local paper was the Manchester Evening News and full.... even then of murders, serious robberies and assaults. It was a report which said that the police were searching for 2 youths who had kicked over the sign outside Elizabeth's chippy. I often used to think that the police in Caithness would turn out for stuff they wouldnt have bothered stopping for back in Manchester. I didnt make any sort of analysis of this ...it was just a feeling.
