Travelling around the back roads I keep noticing that some of the signs are in the square position, as in sides are vertical, whereas othere are in the diamond position... is there a reason for this?

A wondering Angel...

Passing places are generally marked with a diamond-shaped white sign with the words "passing place" on it. New signs tend to be square rather than diamond-shaped, as diamond signs are also used for instructions to tram drivers in cities.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-track_road#Single-track_roads_in_Scotland) I tried to get a better source for it but all I could find quickly was this list of traffic signs which just shows the vertical square one:

Suspect the EU bureaucrats had something to do with it.
