None of eight premises checked sold to under-age persons

OFFICERS of Northern Constabulary completed a test purchase operation within Off-Sales Licensed Premises throughout Thurso, yesterday.
This involved the use of specially trained young persons, who under close supervision of Police Officers, entered licensed premises and attempted to purchase alcohol over the counter, whilst being under 18 years of age.
During this operation a total of eight licensed premises were tested, all 8 of which challenged the young person and refused to sell them alcohol.
Wick based Temporary Inspector Craig Thomson who is leading the Operation, said: "This is a very encouraging result, with all premises tested fully complying with the Code of Practice for Off-Sales Premises on this occasion. This demonstrates that the on-going robust stance adopted by Northern Constabulary in identifying those retailers and assistants who continue to break the law is effective. It is an offence to sell alcohol to anyone under 18 and it is not just the licence holder who is legally liable, but also all the staff working in any licensed premises."
Similar tests will continue to take place throughout the Force area.
