View Full Version : Sarcleteers?
Hello, I've heard a few mentions of the Sarcleteers group and was wondering if it was for people whose forebears lived at Sarclet.
My Munro/Cumming relations lived there in the mid 19th century.
Any info would be very welcome.
Cheers
Angela
hello Angela,
I am interested to know your Munro links, as my wife is the great granddaughter of John Munro of Latheron and we still hav'nt found any living family in Caithness.

Hi Angela,
The Sarcleteers are a very nice Yahoo group of people with families who can be traced back to Sarclet. If you're interested in joining, send me your details - to fmcameron@lineone.net - and I'll send them on to the person who can invite you to the group.
Fiona
hello, I'm afraid there doesn't seem to be any obvious connection. My gt grandfather's family were from the Halkirk area and my gt grandmother's (m.s. also Munro) family came from Reay.
Sorry!
Angela

I have asked to join the group too although I only saw Sarclet for the first time last year. My great grandmother Elizabeth Bremner 1835-1905 came from there and was the daughter of Alexander Bremner 1804-1882 and Anne Wilson 1798-1868. Elizabeth married Kenneth Fleming and went off to Fanagmore, Sutherland to live for a couple of years before returning to Wick to live out the rest of her days. Alexander's father John Bremner came from Gansclet and I wonder if any of you can tell me where that is please?
Best regards Marion
Hello Tricia
Yes it is! Baby Robert was my gt gt grandfather.
Do you have a connection?

Angela
Hi Angela
I don't at this moment have connections although I do have Munro in Caithness early 1900s.
Have you seen the post today by Trinkie suggesting CFHS www.caithnessfhs.org.uk - they also have an separate eGroup which you can be part of and I am sure others on there as well as on here will help - you will possibly find more links.
If you have any further info let me know - how far back have you gone in Caithness - happy to help.
My Caithness family go back to as least 1600s.

Who did your Robert above marry?
Oops - I meant to say Baby Robert was my gt grandfather.
Robert & Marjory were my gt gt grandparents.
Robert married Elizabeth Munro (her m.s. also).
Ringing any bells?
Hi Angela
I got your other email but thought I would answer this part here.
I assume you have found your family in various census etc.?

Next door to Marjory's parents. Shows your Robert b Halkirk. Baby Robert (your gt grandfather) is aged 9 here and in 1851 was 3 weeks not 3 years.

Hi Tricia
Yes, I had found the Munros and Cummings via scotlandspeople. Thanks for replying - sorry our Munros don't link up though.
I'm sure there's a More connection somewhere -but possibly to my Mowats/Sinclairs (my maternal grandmother's side of the family).
When I was small so many people were referred to as "your friends" meaning "your cousins" - cousins often many times removed of course. And sometimes I expect "friends" did mean just that, not relations at all!
Thanks again & Happy New Year.

Hi Tricia,
Sorry I've just now noticed this post from you.
I'll try the website you mention, it all helps.
I have more info now re my Cummings/Millers/Davidsons through the website recommended by Mary. :D The Cummings were married at Latheron in 1812 , and were living at Ulbster in 1941, before moving to Sarclet.
I haven't heard anything from the Sarcleteers group so far, sadly. :(
I'm curious as to how and why Alexander Cumming came to be a weaver!
I only started looking at my family history a couple of months ago - the Caithness side (where I had more info to begin with) are in the late 1700's at the moment....
Regards
Angela
Hi Angela,
Which Millers are you looking for? Some names and dates please?
Hi Angela,
Which Millers are you looking for? Some names and dates please?
Hi
Jane (Jean) Miller (born abt 1785) m. Alexander Cummin(g) Latheron 1812.
In 1841 they were at Ulbster, by 1851 at Sarclet, until Jane's death there in 1871. Alexander was a weaver.
Jane's parents were Francis Miller (Fisherman) and Margaret Donn, but I've no more info about them yet.
