Change-of-plea driver to fight drunk-in-charge accusation

A SINGLE mother, who hid a 15-year-old party guest police were searching for and denied knowing his whereabouts has been ordered to carry out 50 hours unpaid work in the community.,
Holly More, of 8 Thistle Park, Wick admitted wasting police time, on October 2.
It was stated that the 21-year old signed a statement saying that the youth had left her house earlier. The police, however, decided to check it out and found the boy, hiding in the house. More, said she had no idea that the lad was 15 but didn't want to get anyone into trouble.
Solicitor George Mathers said that the teenager had been taken to the party by a couple of older friends. The accused saw him on a number of occasions during the evening and told him to phone his parents which she subsequently discovered he had not done.
Mr Mathers said: "More panicked when the police arrived. It was a stupid thing to do and she is very sorry."
Sheriff Andrew Berry observed that had the police accepted More's signed statement, without checking, the officers could have been involved in a fruitless search for hours or days even.

Knife allegation

THE first accused to be charged on petition with carrying a knife, following a tougher prosecuting warning by Wick fiscal David Barclay, appeared on petition in private.Gary George Alexander Macleod, 34, from Castletown, made no plea or declaration during the brief appearance before Sheriff Andrew Berry and was released on bail pending further inquiry.
Macleod is accused of having been in possession of a knife in Castletown, on December 15.
Earlier this month, Mr Barclay warned that anyone alleged to have been carrying a knife, over the festive period, would automatically be charged on petition.
