Offenders could face jail sentences of up to five years

Wick fiscal David Barclay has issued a tougher sentences warning to people who carry knives over the festive season in Caithness.
Offenders face being placed on petition which is reserved for more serious crimes and which carries jail sentences of up to five years.
The Crown already adopts a robust policy on the crime and the warning issued today by the senior fiscal depute underlines its stance. With the festive season upon us, Mr Barclay says the streets and public areas can expect to be busier and he has issued his timely warning in order to give the public reassurance.
He added:"Unless there are truly exceptional circumstances, all offences involving knives between the period December 1 and January 4, will be placed on petition."
