Cart before horse practice claims windfarm objector

CAITHNESS windfarm objector Stuart Young has criticised the practice of wind energy companies being paid to switch off their turbines for six days this month, because the national grid can't cope with additional supplies.
The so-called constraint payment applies to all forms of generation to avoid overload and guarantee stability of flow. Payments cost consummers £174,000 in 2010.
Mr Young says that the practice is the inevitable consequence of the Scottish Government in allowing firms to build windfarm before ensuring there was sufficient capability to carry the electricity to consummers.
As spokesman for Nation Grid said that the cost to balance the UK network amounted to less than one per cent on the average domestic customer bill.
