In 1891 the YMCA challenged Canadian James Naismith to create a winter game to occupy students. After nailing peach baskets on opposite ends of a gym balcony and working out some simple rules the game of Basketball was invented.

And another one for Canadians, in 1964 the Maple Leaf was officially adopted as the national flag.

Famous engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel responsible for designing and building the Eiffel Tower was born this day in 1832.

And in 1916 Gregori Rasputin was murdered on this day.
