Musicians to say thanks for the memory of trombonist Jim

THE Caithness Big Band is set to lead a big bash, their annual musical tribute to their founder, Jim Marshall tomorrow night (Friday) and give leading cancer charities a boost at the same time.
The charity gig, at Thurso’s Weigh Inn Motel, will also feature guests, The North Coast Jazz Band and local outfit, They Drove by Night plus a spot by The Sunday Night Band. All proceeds from the £5 admission fees will be split between Cancer Research UK, Thurso’s North Highland Cancer Information Centre and Macmillan Nurses.
Jim Marshall died from cancer early in 2006 and the big band held their first musical memory night in November of the same year. The charity performance was so successful that the musicians decided to make it an annual event. To date it has raised £5,000 for the cancer charities.
Band member Andy Wymer said: “Jim was a friend to many. He played trombone with the band and encouraged beginners through the Sunday Night Band to enjoy the delights of swing music. In addition, it provided a training platform with which to keep the big band up to strength. The Sunday Nighters will be playing three numbers at this year’s gig which would have made Jim proud”.
