THIRTY jobs are to be created in Caithness by a supply chain company which claims the area has one of the most important roles to play in the future of the Scottish economy. The Renewables Directory Limited is in the final stages of agreeing a deal with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to relocate part of it operation from Bearsden to the far north, to cash in on the marine renewals industry sector. Over the next two years, it aims to hire 30 staff as it gears up to service an expected fast build-up of work in the renewable sector.

POLICE were called to Caithness General Hospital on Saturday night after a patient went missing and was later found eight miles away, in the village of Watten during a torrential downpour. Officers were alerted at 10.45pm after staff on the ground floor Queen Elizabeth wing of the Wick hospital, noticed that Kai Schilling had disappeared.

AS superstorm Sandy hit the eastern seaboard of America, a Caithness artist was taking shelter in his Brooklyn home. Ian Scott who comes from Wick but now lives and works in New York, was upstairs in his house as the storm created chaos in his adopted state on Monday. CINEMA-goers in Caithness have been classed as unique after bucking the trend of declining audience figures across the UK during the summer. Thurso Cinema welcomed its, 20,000 customers on Saturday, during the opening weekend of the new James Bond film, Skyfall, despite only being open for 13 weeks.

RESIDENTS and their families have claimed a victory after it as announced an on-site warden is set to be reintroduced at two Thurso sheltered housing schemes. Elderly people living at Oldfield Court and Queen’s Court have celebrated the move that will see Highland Council build an on-site warden facility due to be completed.

A SENIOR SNP member of Highland Council has come under fire from a former Nationalist councillor who has accused him of “a shameful attitude’ during a fiery debate about scrapping bulky goods charges for OAPs. Transport chief, Graham Phillips was attacked by the opposition led by Councillor David Bremner, after he slapped down a motion seeking a review of the policy which sees over 65-year-olds in the Highlands charged £15 for the removal of items like old sofas and fridges.

ASSISTANT manager Richard Hughes stepped down from his role as caretaker manager of Wick Academy with an impressive record of five wins from six league matches as Barry Wilson takes the reins for the first time tonight. In one of the most turbulent periods the club has every experienced, Tichie has won praise from fans and pundits for a fine run of form that has made the Caithness club, a potential dark horse for the Highland League crown. He now continues as assistant to Wilson.
