Rice not nice for Wick police

A COURT heard yesterday about the takeaway meal that didn’t go down well with the police...it was thrown at them!
Their passing patrol van was showered with rice, the sheriff at Wick was told.
Unemployed Donald McPhee, 37, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour and a previous record. The incident occurred at The Shore, Wick, in the early hours of September 1.
Solicitor Neil Wilson said: “I expect the rice would have washed off in the next shower of rain”.
He added: “Throwing it, was not the way a sober, sensible, person would have behaved but the accused was neither at the time. He had had far too much to drink and has little recollection of the incident.”
Sheriff Andrew Berry observed that it was the second time, this year, that McPhee, of 20 Traill Street, Castletown, had appeared in the court for disorderly behaviour, and warned him a third such conviction would likely mean a custodial sentence.
The father-of-five was ordered to carry out 75 hours unpaid community service.

Postman jailed for “gross breach of trust”

A WICK postman has been jailed for a postal packets fraud the sheriff described as “a gross breach of trust”.
The three months sentence was passed on Robert Mcilroy, of Scarfs Craig Place, in the town.
Mcilroy (47) admitted stealing 13 'test' Royal Mail packages containing cash on January 11.
The company was concerned about postal packages going missing and set a trap. He was caught in the sting operation mounted on his Wick-Inverness delivery run. The theft was said to have been prompted by financial difficulties the accused was experiencing.
Sheriff Berry said that the severe, depression Mcilroy was reported to have been suffering, was not borne out by a background report before the court.

Short-of-breath driver banned

A DRIVER was arrested by police after she gave a positive roadside test.
However, Lynda Donn failed to supply two further samples at the police station.
Donn, of 16 Anderson Drive, Wick, pleaded guilty. She was fined £540 and banned from driving for a year.
David Barclay, prosecuting, said that the 52-year-old claimed to officers that she was "doing her best" to comply with their requests, at Wick police station, on August 4, but didn't appear to be providing sufficient breath for the intoximeter machine.
A request by Mr Barclay for forfeiture of the accused's car, which was impounded, was rejected by Sheriff Berry
